I have an unnatural want for a mint condition first-generation Chevy Lumina. Coolest damn interiors ever with some of the best heavy clicky-ass switchgear I’ve ever felt.

HELL YEAH. 210hp, Getrag goodness in a well-styled ‘90s coupe. I don’t care what anyone says, those add up to fun

I can't seem to post pics anymore, but here is where I insert Tommy Lee Jones glaring at you over his newspaper.

My dad one (‘91 or ‘92 maybe) as a company car. Looked pretty much just like this one down to the color and hubcaps. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world.
Until he got a ‘93 Intrepid.

That is seriously good looking for a 90s interior. Cant believe that is in a chebby!

I really want to drive a manual 3400 Lumina. They’re impossible to find and break constantly but I absolutely love the idea of them.

I had no idea ... thats actually pretty cool. Chevy should go back to this.

Manual 3400 Lumina? I thought they’d dropped the manual trans by the time the 3400 debuted.

I used to drive one of those, a 1993 auto almost identical to this picture I found:
Unfortunately, that was before I was even interested in cars, so I don’t really remember what it was like to drive. I liked its looks, though. Both inside and out. Aesthetically, it reminded me of a “sharper” version of a 1992 LeSabre.

My friend owned two of the special quad-cam 3.4L manual transmission unicorn cars. Each was a nightmare of maintenance in its own way. These things have quasi-exotic maintenance needs. And for all that heartache and suffering, he was rewarded by driving an old Lumina. Not a car I would buy. But an odd little coupe nonetheless.

Have driven two. The Grand Prix GTP and the Lumina of Doomina. Both understeered like mad and had to work hard to keep up with Miatas in a straight line. Both were a total bitch to fix and maintain.

I like both of those a lot. Not everything was round and bubbly in the ’90s.

No. Just ... no. It’s a pile of parts in search of forward momentum, but it probably won’t get there. Or anywhere. Maybe a used W123 wagon? An illegal VW diesel? A fast Ford?

I’ve always thought the Z34 Luminas were pretty cool cars and still pretty good looking. Having driven a few of the regular Luminas and other GM cars of the era, I’d be completely ok if I never even sat in one again.

Z34 5-speeds are quick.
Fun fact: I was supposed to get a white on red ‘93 Z34 (3.4 auto) as my first car but we got outbid at the auto auction. It was mint with 32k miles too. Sigh.

They’re quick until they inevitably break down.

The DOHC itself isn't a flawed motor, it's just a bitch to work on. That, and no one ever changes the timing belt like they should.
